Context and rationale:
UNIOGBIS and the UN system in Guinea-Bissau produce on a regularly basis radio productions, including features, current news, spots, debates, interviews, soap opera;
In order to maintain high quality standards for those outputs, UNIOGBIS/PIU has built a studio. To assist setting up technically a radio production studio, UNIOGBIS/PIU is seeking a National Consultant.
Under the direct supervision of UNIOGBIS Chief Technical Support and Chief PIU, he/she, among others, will set up and test radio and sound equipment for taped radio programs, and advise on editing material; Operate multi-channel recording and mix-down equipment, including digital telephone interconnection equipment.
Summary of Position:
The National Consultant will set up a variety of technical services for in-studio radio productions, special projects, and outreach activities.
Responsibilities:
Specifically, he/she is expected to:
1. Set up and operate various items of radio production equipment, to include microphones, multi-channel mixers, digital recorders, telephone circuits and interfaces, audio processors, and recorders, for studio production.
2. Operate and set proper levels and calibration of audio recorders, switchers, and other recording studio production equipment.
3. Prepare studio with requested equipment and setup for live and/or taped sessions in a variety of formats.
4. Complete troubleshooting and preventative maintenance reports on audio production equipment; advise on the upkeep of studio properties.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in electrical or computer engineering or related fields. High school diploma or equivalent (in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree), with a minimum of four (4) years’ experience.
Experience:
A minimum of 3 years with Bachelor’s Degree, of progressively responsible experience setting up radio studios or as a radio technician.
A minimum of four (4) years with High school diploma or equivalent, of progressively responsible experience working in a broadcast environment as a technician or an engineer, capable of installing, repairing, calibrating and wiring broadcast equipment and software.
Language:
Fluency in Portuguese (spoken and written) is required. French and/or English will be an asset.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to set up and operate digital recorders, sound processing equipment, multi-track audio consoles, and ancillary radio production equipment;
- Ability to test, calibrate, and troubleshoot audio and related radio production equipment;
- Knowledge of two-way radio equipment, components and systems;
- Knowledge of earphone, telephone, and cellular telephone systems and equipment;
- Knowledge of digital technology;
